Rohini and Nithya Menen Speak in Indian Cinema as Actresses See It

"From the Mother India to an Urban Love Romance Heroin, Feminist Representation in Indian Films"

"From the Mother India to an Urban Love Romance Heroin, Feminist Representation in Indian Films" is originally a three-years (and now extended to four-years) JSPS-granted research project (KAKENHI #26370191) that started in 2014. The purpose of the project is to probe the development of feminine images represented in male-icons-dominant Indian films, and to elucidate how the embodiment of the visual manifestation is accorded with the modernization of Indian society. This is studied by:

  1. Monitoring how preceding studies determined the female icon of Indian womanhood as visual images of Mother India in early mythological films.
  2. Analyzing textually how female characters are visually represented in such genres as patriotic, devotional, and urban love romance films.
  3. Making interviews with female directors and actresses active in present Indian film industries.

In order to publicize the research interim outcome, a symposium entitled Indian Cinema as Actresses See It was held on 21, March, 2015 at Kobe Gakuin University. Two eminent personalities of South Indian film industry, Rohini and Nithya Menen, were present there to speak their own experience in the film industry. Our discussion included not only their diverse achievements in the industry such as a singer, dubbing artist, and lyricist, the measure they employed to survive in, or often exploieted, the male-dominant society of Indian cinema. It extended even to social incidents like Nirbhaya case, a tragic murder happened in 2012, and how a female-leading movement including a lot of actresses and woman directors incited a nationwide protest against the violation of Indian women’s rights.
